According to the Take Back Watsonville website, the group was inspired by Take Back Santa Cruz, and was formed out of a neighborhood watch group located in Watsonville. Take Back Watsonville held its first major public meeting on October 9, 2012. According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, 25 people attended the meeting that also included a presentation by the Watsonville Police Department.
Take Back Watsonville began to take shape after Paul Gutierrez, who moved to Watsonville in August of 2012, was featured as a crime victim in an article in the Watsonville Patch in September of 2012. Gutierrez was then made a blogger for the website where he had the opportunity to establish and promote Take Back Watsonville and raise funds for the new organization.
