Stanstead Journal, Mar. 8, 1945: “old landmarks demolished”

  • For years after his time the Wyman street property was utilized in connection with shoe and leather industry. One of the early operators was George W. James. Other operators were: Ozro Morrill, Morrill & Judd, William Jondro, Jondro & Goodhue. The so-called Jondro factory was later used by Robins and Gilmore, overalls, etc., and later by H. G. Duncalfe and H. J. Gauthier, in the same line. The last use for industrial purposes was by H. J. Cordeau, plumber and tinsmith.

  • The Reed Brothers:
    • John, Samuel, and Stephen: started a paper mill about 1832, and for a few years sustained a large and profitable business in paper, books and general stationery; but the abundant supplies of those articles from the southern markets at very low prices , and the general depression of the times, compelled them to relinquish the enterprise. They had built at an expense of $5,000. The property has since passed into the hands of Ozro Morrill. (p. 34)
  • Ozro Morrill:
    • In 1827, Harris Way purchased from the heirs of Freeman Haskell the clothier’s shop and the greater part of the other property, and subsequently bought the shop and other real estate of Otis Warren. Mr. Way continued in business until 1855, and then sold out to Ozro Morrill. (p. 34)

    • In later years (late 1850s) George James bought the stand occupied by Benjamin Wyman, and carried on an extensive business in tanning and making boots and shoes. He afterwards sold out to Ozro Morrill, and the business has since been continued by Morrill & Judd. (p. 35)

    • Quit Claim by Russel G. Hopkinson, Collector of Customs from the Town of Derby (Vt.), to Ozro Morrill, Trader of the Township of Stanstead.
      • Résumé : Suite au paiement effectué par Morrill, Hopkinson suspend sa demande et accorde une Quittance générale. Le différent provient de l’achat d’un terrain de Rock Island (lot no 1 du 9e rang) par Morrill et décrit ainsi : «…on a part of which Moses Franklin Wright formerly erected a Building for a tannery […] with the Rights and privilege to the said Ozro Morrill […] to use so much water from the canal and dam on said Premises as shall not be required for the Clothing and Oil Mills on or near Premises […] ». Morrill peut donc utiliser le canal et le barrage tant que cela ne nuise pas aux moulins précités.

    • Copartnership between Ozro Morrill, Trader, Asa Linsday Harvey, Farmer, and Hiram Bishop, Tanner and Currier, all of the Township of Stanstead.
      • Résumé : Entente de partenariat dans le commerce de la « Tannery and Curring Leather » qui doit prévaloir pendant trois ans, sous le nom de firme de « Harvey, Bishop and Company ». Ce sont Harvey et Bishop qui gèreront le commerce, la production et les employés : « …Ozro Morrill shall not be an active partner in the carrying of the business […] ». En fait, Morrill recevra 1/6 des profits, alors que les deux autres associés se partageront le reste. [Probablement dans les installations achetées par Morrill en octobre 1844 (voir acte no 1948) ; non mentionné dans l’acte].

      • Résumé : Vente de deux lots appartenant, d’une part, au lot no 20 du 10e rang du Canton de Stanstead et, d’autre part, au lot no 19 du 10e rang du même canton. Le deuxième terrain est particulièrement intéressant car il inclut : « …the saw and Grist Mills, Blacksmith’s shop and all other Buildings and Improvements thereon erected and made […] ». La vente est conclue pour la somme de 1250 pounds. [Voir # 1619 pour le Grist Mill, que Morrill avait fait construire.]
