  • TILTON, John Albert, Stanstead, Que. Born Smith Mills, Que., March 19, 1872, son of John and Mary (Gale) Tilton; English, grandfather came from Tilton, N.H., about 1800, settling at Smith Mills, Que. E. public schools. Elected School Commissioner for Township of Stanstead and chairman of said board 1910 and 1911; elected member Stanstead Village Council 1914; vice-pres. Stanstead Board of Trade; A.F. & A.M., I.O.O.F.; Liberal; Methodist; 1895 purchased lumber mill at Smith Mills, Que., operating same as sole owner until 1905, when he formed partnership with M. Raymond of Smith Mills, firm known as Tilton & Raymond, dealers in pulpwood and lumber; in 1912 sold interest in business and formed partnership with Lt.-Col. B. B. Morrill of Rock Island, Que., as Rock Island Mfg. Co.; two years later stock company was formed as the Three Villages Building Association, Rock Island, Que., John A. Tilton, vice-pres. and general manager of said firm. Married Henrietta M. Goold, Waterloo, Que., Sept. 22, 1896, (deceased 1911); children, Cecil G., Andrew G., Ellison M., Olivia, Francis Lawrence, Constance Mary (deceased.) Married 2nd, Bertha E. Clark, Stanstead, June 30, 1914; one son, John Albert.

    • Traite de J. A. Tilton de Stanstead “whose place of business is situated in Rock Island, is vice-president and general manager of the Three Village Building Association, Limited, which was established in 1895 under the name of J. A. Tilton”.
      • Né à Smith’s Mills (Tomifobia) le 19 mars 1872, il travaille d’abord sur une ferme, comme plombier pour la Boston & Maine Railway, et finalement, comme coupeur de pierre pour la Moir Granite Company. En 1895, il acquiert un « shingle mill » et s’associe à M. Raymond. En 1912, le partenariat est dissous et Tilton s’associe avec Col. B. B. Morrill, dans un commerce connu sous le nom de Rock Island Manufacturing Company. En 1913, la compagnie prend le nom de Three Village Building Association : « The firm deals in general lumber, housewood finish material, interior woodwork, door sash, shingles and roofing, as well as stocking driers, wood novelties, toys and other such articles. Mr. Tilton was also a partner with J. C. Holland in the real estate business, the firm being know as the H and T Land Company, which gave land to the new factory to be erected for the Corset Manufacturing Company ».
