  • EDLER, John Wallace, Customs Officer, Beebe, Que. — Born at Beebe, Jan. 22, 1862, son of Hugh W. and Susan M. (Watson) Edler, Scotch; grandfather, H. W. Edler, coming from Edinburgh, (being a graduate Edinburgh Uni.) to Bytown, now Ottawa, as teacher and later locating in Stanstead, teaching at Marlow and Stanstead Academy; E. public school and Derby Academy; 1880 appointed customs officer at Beebe Jct., resigned 1896, re-appointed 1912; School Commissioner 1905 to present; elected to Beebe Council 1913, Mayor 2 years, warden Stanstead Co. 2 years; associated with his father, H. W. Edler and were first owners of Stanstead Granite Co.; member I.O.F. and Frontier Club; Anglican; married Helen Bacon of Beebe, Que., Oct. 8, 1889; children, Helen Vera (deceased 1913, age 19); Mary Jeane and Arnold B.
