Brown University is among the oldest colleges and universities in the United State and a member of the prestigious Ivy League. Originally founded as Rhode Island College primarily under the leadership of Moses Brown, it was the first college established in Rhode Island. As the institution developed in the 19th century, it was renamed for its main beneficiary.
