What do you know about The Ellis-Shackelford House?

Exact location : 1242 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004.

The Ellis-Shackelford House is the home of Arizona Humanities and is located in Central Phoenix, Arizona.

This is a historic house that was designed by an architect named R.A Gray and It was built in 1917 by physician William C. Ellis (hence the name the Ellis-Shackelford)-

The reason this house is so significant is because of its architectural design, use of materials and a high level of craftsmanship. This is sort of a Prairie style which was and still is common in the Midwest and this house then was in Vogue in Phoenix. The architectural style of this house is that It has three stories and a basement, hardwood floors throughout the large home, hand painted chandeliers and wire cut bricks that were from Colorado. Something unique about this site is that Its wood trim and banister were imported as mahogany trees from the Philippines and milled right on site of the Ellis Shackelford home.

Dr. Ellis was a native of Ohio and moved to phoenix back in the early 1900's. When he moved to phoenix in 1907 he helped organize the Arizona  Deaconess Hospital which is now named "Good Samaritan" and he served as the chief of medical staff. His daughter and her husband actually lived in this house until after 1964 which the house then became a boys home and then shortly after became the Arizona Historical Society offices and museum.

The house now is currently owned by the City of Phoenix and is the home to the Arizona Humanities. The Arizona Humanities and the City of Phoenix share the use of the house for office space as well as meetings are held there. In 2006, the City received almost a million dollars in bond funds for rehabilitation for this property.

You are now allowed to rent this property for special events
