The Monte Vista Food Center is small organic grocery with a wide variety of produce in the Piedmont Avenue neighborhood of North Oakland, California.  There is a bulk foods section, a good selection of fresh and dried spices, vegan foods and discounted produce located at the end of the produce aisle.  The staff is super friendly and helpful, and the prices overall are lower then at the Piedmont Grocery

Early in the store's history it went by the name Monte Vista Market from at least the 1940's up until 2005, when the name changed to Monte Vista Food Center.  During the earlier era, Monte Vista Market had an old fashioned butcher shop right inside the front door with refrigerated display counters filled with fresh, locally grown meats.  The butchers wore white uniforms, sawdust covered the hardwood floors and items such as hot dogs, sausage and ground beef, etc. was made on the premises.  When the butcher who owned the shop retired, the grocery store was unable to find another local butcher to continue in the same space.

The store has changed ownership a couple of times over the past 15 years, with the neighborhood family that owned the business selling it to new owners, and then in 2005 Monte Vista Market changed ownership again with the current owners, also a local family who changed the store's name and updated the food choices for more modern palates.
