Hanlon Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co., Oakland Inner Harbor (1917) 1

The Hanlon Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company was a dry dock business at the foot of 5th Avenue from 1916 until 1928. It was owned by D.J. Hanlon. 2

Hanlon died in 1924, at age 56. 4 In 1928, the facility was sold to General Engineering and Drydock. 3

The Oakland Public Library caption on the above photo states "Partial view of Hanlon Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company, Oakland Inner Harbor. This is one of Oakland's great new industries -- a brand new plant. In 1916 the payroll averaged $5000 a week; by fall of 1917 the payroll will run to $60,000 a week. In 1916 built one wooden vessel costing about $300,000. Now has contracts for six steel vessels at about $1,500,000 each, or $9,000,000 worth." 1

Caption on the second photo reads "Another partial view Hanlon plant. At present this plant employs 775 men. By early in 1918 will employ at least 2300 men, and possibly more. 600 feet of additional waterfront was recently acquired by purchase and lease. Whatever happens, shipbuilding will remain active for at least six years more and this plant will pour a golden flood of payrolls into Oakland." 1
