Acme Fire Extinguisher is an Oakland business that has been around since 1941. The store is at 1305 Fruitvale Avenue.
Their iconic sign near Fruitvale BART is a neighborhood landmark. According to owner Bruce McLeod, his father and grandfather bought the sign used in the 1960s and had it sandblasted and painted with the company name. It originally had neon tubes, but vandals broke them many times.
This sign was the inspiration for the beloved Oakland blog Our Oakland.
