How to keep digital memory and connect more resources?

Digitalization and digital archiving are not just means to reserve precious cultural assets internationally. They are essential to keep cultural resources circulating, and pushing cultural innovation and development. “Archiving” is not just for museums, galleries, and libraries. Moreover, it should be expanded to local communities and personal archiving in daily life context. Besides, in recent years the issues of open data flourished. With the lead of the technics such as semantic web/ linked data, Digital archiving resources should go for a more open and diverse way that contains much more possibilities.

This workshop focus on local communities’ digital culture archiving. Giving up using unopened, self-built websites, we use LocalWiki as a main tool to introduce how the concepts/cases work and conduct actual practices, guiding the participants how to easily build a digital resource library that is open, shared, and connected with each other.

Frontier Foundation is an organization that dedicated to reduce the digital divided for all times. The speaker believes that archiving should be started from the individual, which is the beginning of the formation of the national memory. When people start to preserve their personal documentation and inheritance, and then disseminate, utilize, and add values on them, which will gradually form  people's common memories and cultural assets of Taiwan (Republic of China).

Wikipedia believes in the wisdom of crowd. Co-writing is a way that is much more open, containing more diverse opinions. And with the passage of time, the contents and writers are changing, which allow this topic to accumulate data more quickly.

Now we can aggregate opinions through this co-writing platform. When encountering different views of the topic, each side has to offer a neutral attitude and stay open-minded. On the other hand, it is indispensable to bring up talented people that can co-write and manage the local communities. With the abilities of feeling empathy and clearly distinguishing the differences between "views" and "facts", and most importantly, to embrace everybody, that can put co-writing into practice.

Local culture can be preserved through digitalization. Moreover, to empower the communities. Web 2.0 makes people on the internet can interact with each other. LocalWiki connects these digital resources and local knowledge  together by presenting not only text but also pictures, videos on the internet which is much more vivid and lively than writing.
