See Gone, But Not Forgotten

  • Date: Apr 6, 2010 - "Year-old Green Cafe in Collegetown closes". The Ithaca Journal - Ithaca, N.Y.
  • "Posted: Friday, 02 April 2010 1:31PM - Green Cafe Shuts Down - Legal and financial troubles have led to the closing of a popular late-night eatery in Collegetown. - Green Café at the corner of College Avenue and Dryden Road shut down Thursday, with a Tompkins County court date set for April 23rd." 1

Green Cafe opened March 26th, 2009; the restaurant featured a hot bar and a salad bar, a teriyaki grill, self serve soup, grilled burgers and subs, and prepared sandwiches and sushi (which even includes kimbap, a Korean sushi roll with pickled daikon). The hot bar included fish, ribs, chicken wings, mac and cheese, potatoes, mushrooms, and a generic Chinese fried chicken dish with sweet sauce. The salad bar included lettuce and pasta salad, seafood salad, tomato and onion salad, caprese salad, cucumber salad, etc. At the counter they sold various snacks, from energy bars to candy.

As of April 2009, a bowl of white rice with teriyaki chicken was $8.99 - $9.50, soup was $2.95 - $3.95, pre-made sandwiches were around $6 - $9, and the pre-made sushi rolls were around $5 - $12. The price for the both bars was $7.99 per pound (you are allowed to mix and match).

During the morning (up to 11:00am) Green Cafe served breakfast, including: sausage, corned beef, bacon, Canadian bacon, lox, omelettes, French toast, pancakes, bagels and pastries. They had a full coffee bar serving various caffeinated beverages along with smoothies and juices.

2009-03-28 22:47:18   While Green Cafe isn't terrible, I think it is overrated. For most people a meals worth of food at the bar is going to cost at least $10. I also can't stand how very few items in the hot/salad bar are labeled, so some items are mysterious. This is especially a problem when they are serving dishes like ribs. I have no clue if its a Japanese style short rib, a Korean style BBQ rib, or an American style BBQ rib. The salmon was dry and overcooked, the chicken wings were not crispy, and were covered in a thick soggy skin. On the plus side, the mushrooms were great. They had the perfect amount of sweet, savory, and salty flavor. In addition the mushrooms contained some mysterious meat in them which oddly enough blended in visually with the mushrooms. While the meat was tasty, this would not be a pleasant surprise for a vegetarian. This is why putting labels on a buffet is so important. I thought the prepared salads were reasonably tasty. Overall, if If I feel like eating salads or if its after 2:00am and I'm in Collegetown and I'm not in the mood for pizza, then this place is decent enough that I would go back. However, during normal eating hours, there are plenty of better and less expensive places in the area. —MattHh
