Katherine (or Catherine) A. Hanmer Hayes operated a cure cottage at 46 Franklin Avenue from 1948 through 1967 with her husband and later with her grandson, Clark Knight.  She was a daughter of guide boat builder Theodore Hanmer.

Mrs. Catherine E. Hayes

SARANAC LAKE - Mrs. Catherine E. Hayes, 94, of 21 Woodruff St., died Sunday morning , Jan. 6, at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.

She was born Jan. 14, 1890, in Black Brook, the daughter of Theodore and Emma (Hebert) Hanmer.

She had been a resident of Saranac Lake for the past 40 years and had owned and operated a tuberculosis cure cottage at 46 Franklin Ave., from 1945 until her retirement in 1975.

Her husband, Clark A. Hayes, died March 6, 1951.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Harold Carpenter of Boulder Creek, Calif.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Katherine Knight Perry of New York City and Mrs. Marjorie Ranch of San Carlos, Calif.: three grandsons, Clark M. Knight and Jack C. Knight, both of Saranac Lake, and James C. Knight of Bronx, New York City; a great-grandson, James Knight, Jr. of New York City; a sister, Bessie Hanmer of Saranac Lake; and a niece, Mary Jane Baldwin of Dayton, Ohio.

There will be no calling hours. The funeral service will be private and at the Fortune Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harold Van Horn, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery in May.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church in care of the funeral home.
