German TV is almost exclusively broadcast in German (even the very many American shows and films).  The only exception is a short British film, 'Dinner for One' which is shown almost non-stop on New Year's Eve, but watching TV in English is much easier today than ever before, and all it takes is a good high speed internet connection (commonly available here).

If you are comfortable watching from your computer, that may be the easiest, and you can even hook up your computer to the TV, but there are small boxes with internet access and apps that make the process much easier and usually cost less than 100 EUR.

One word of warning, most streaming services will look at your IP address and change your content for Germany, and often the content you want will be completely blocked.  One way around this is a VPN which tells services that your IP address is somewhere else (you can usually choose a city and country, for example 'London, England' or 'New York, New York').  A VPN can be free or paid and it can be software or hardware.  The most reliable are like having a separate router in your house (then you must buy the box and pay annually for a service).  The article Watch US TV from Anywhere explains some different set ups and services.  TopTen describes the services of 10 VPN services.

Last word of warning, Germans do prosecute those found to have illegally downloaded music and video and you can be easily stuck with a bill over 10,000 euros, so try to avoid those sites.

Streaming Services

Netflix

This is a streaming service available in US and Germany.  You can access their programming wherever you are with just one account for about 10 EUR/month.  However, the shows listed will be different if you look at it from the US or from Germany.  Within Germany, you can usually choose to watch them in German or English and with or without subtitles.  They have English language content and German content, but the German content will not be available in English.  If you watch with a VPN

Amazon Instant Video

Amazon.de and Amazon.com offer Instant Video.  You can buy or rent individual shows or entire seasons.  If you are a prime member, there are some of these included in your membership.  If you have a US or UK prime membership, it will be separate from your German one.  If you watch videos on Amazon.de, you will need to make sure it is in the original version.  It should say 'OV' or 'OmU' - if not, it is probably dubbed into German. Subtitles may not be available.

Hulu

While Netflix and Amazon basically offer older and completed seasons, Hulu is a premium streaming TV destination that offers thousands of hours of the best of current season programming, premium original content and full seasons of hit series to subscribers across millions of internet-connected devices in the U.S. Hulu is the only streaming subscription service that offers current season content from 5 of the 6 largest U.S. broadcast networks.

It seems you would need to have a US billing address for their service, and they have been the most strict about those outside the US.  They have in the past cut off anyone who appeared to be using a VPN, and without a VPN, it is impossible to access their content outside the US.

iTunes

Apple was one of the first ones in this game, and they still offer easily downloadable content.  However, everything must be individually purchased or rented - there is no video service.  Their content is available only on a computer or their devices (their TV, phones or iPads).  There is a difference in content based on which 'store' (think country) you use.  Each 'store' requires a different login/account, but it is not dependent on using a VPN.  You do need to have a billing address in the 'store' you wish to use.

NFL Live Games

Designed for people living outside the US.  You can watch live games with the NFL game pass includes access to live and archived video of NFL preseason and regular season games, NFL Network and NFL RedZone (up to 250 EUR for unlimited viewing).  They have apps for your Xbox, Windows, Android, or iOS device.

Devices and Equipment

These are devices that you can attach to your tv.  They usually connect directly to the internet and have apps to access the services above.  They do the same thing a smart tv does, but it may be easier to find the services you want with one of these.

Sling Box

For US users with a cable subscription back at home, you can 'sling' your cable account to where ever you travel.

Roku

For US users, you buy this cute little box and connect it to your TV in Germany.  It has the biggest selection of services available, however, many require subscriptions (like Netflix), a VPN or a cable subscription in the states.  For under $100, it offers a lot of bang for the buck.

Apple TV

This is available anywhere (you can buy them in Germany).  It allows you to watch any iTunes purchases, Netflix, and many others (NOT Amazon).  One fun thing is if you have an iOS or apple device, you can show anything from your device on your TV.  For example, slide shows, keynote presentations.  That also means if you have an app for something like NFL, you could then play the NFL games from your phone to your tv.

Amazon Fire TV Stick

This is a USB stick that works like the Roku and Apple TV.  It costs only 40 euros from Amazon.de and allows you to access netflix, Amazon Instant videos, You Tube and others.

Game consoles - Xbox, WiiU

In addition to being able to play games, they can have apps to connect your tv to Amazon and Netflix and others.
