What is Oakland Wiki?
Editing at the Oakland History Room.We are a free website about Oakland that anyone can edit. :) All of the content on this wiki has been built by contributors. There was nothing here when the site was first launched in July, 2012. All of it has been built by people out there on the internet, and you are one of the people on the internet who can edit any part of this wiki! Seriously!
Oakland Wiki is a wiki all about Oakland. It's not a wiki like Wikipedia. We can put whatever we want here.
We are a part of the nonprofit LocalWiki network of wikis for towns and cities all around the world.
Who is behind this project?
There isn't an official group that runs Oakland Wiki. Some volunteers meet up in person and edit the wiki. Other volunteers have never met anyone in person, but have contributed lots of valuable knowledge to the wiki. You can see the list of all of our users, but since people can also edit anonymously, it's hard to know exactly how many people have contributed to the wiki.
Although Oakland Wiki is volunteer-run, it is one of many community wikis in the LocalWiki network. LocalWiki is a nonprofit that is working to grow a grassroots effort to collect, share and open the world’s local knowledge.
Oakland Wiki was started in July, 2012.
Are you serious that anyone can edit pages?
Editing at the 81st Ave. Library Branch.Yes. You just need to make an account, then hit "edit" on any entry and start typing. Search for pages in the search box to look for an entry you'd like to contribute to. If the entry doesn't exist yet, you can create it. Check the LocalWiki guide if you need help editing.
What do you think people should know about Oakland? Whatever it is, you can add it here.
Oakland, like SF, is changing fast. It would be interesting to hear descriptions of these changes (Jack London Square, and other neighborhoods perhaps).
